When in Rome
Very recently, Pope Francis paid a visit to the United States for
the very first time. Now, while the Pope spends a great deal of his time
traveling around the world visiting other nations, he is originally housed in
Rome at Vatican City. I have
always heard about this marvelous place and its historical context. Unfortunately,
I have not yet had an opportunity to visit the city myself. Despite never
having been to the Vatican in person however, I have seen documentaries and photographs
of the beautiful landscapes and structures that exist there. The Vatican is a
marvelous city in terms of its architectural features and its religious and
historical significance in the world.
Vatican City, Rome.
Perhaps one of the most famous and most recognizable landmarks of Vatican City is St. Peter's Basilica. Constructed in 1626 and dedicated to the late St. Peter, this sacred church is one of the Papal Basilicas and one of the four Major Basilicas of Rome. Being the most prominent building in the Vatican City, this landmark is known best for its dome, which stands as a dominant feature of the Roman skyline. The church has been deemed the largest of all Christian churches, and hosts several worship services by the Pope each year. St. Peter’s was designed by a group of renowned architects and artists, including Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. St. Peter's is one of the most famous works of Renaissance architecture that exists to this day.
